How Facebook gets rich leveraging personas

(Editor's note: In this guest essay, Mark Weinstein, founder and CEO of Sgrouples.com, a privacy-centric social network, breaks down Facebook's profit model.)

On October 30th, Facebook held its third quarter earnings call. Lost inside the upbeat state of the union was a recurring theme that active and inactive Facebook users need to take note of: Facebook is knowingly placing your information at risk and needs to do more of it in order to survive.

A few years back Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that privacy was dead. That declaration expectedly ruffled a lot of feathers, causing Zuckerberg to step back and makeover his message. What emerged was a positive spin of the same sentiment, one that helped him reframe the equation. Instead of having to defend the company against accusations concerning privacy, safety, and data mining abuses, Facebook would focus on helping us all "understand the world."

This simple three-word statement has become one of the core components of Facebook's current investor messaging along with similar ideas of "connecting everyone" and "helping to build the knowledge economy."

Tantalizing investors and users alike however with optimistic promises to build "the clearest model of everything there is to know in the world" is one thing. Delivering on it is entirely another. While the sentiment rings deeply philosophical, it sadly ends up rather shallow.

What Zuckerberg wants is a world where Facebook can use your information, without limitations, to figure out everything there is to know about you to target marketing for Facebook's gain. Sound farfetched? Guess again.

This year Facebook introduced Graph Search, which makes every piece of Facebook content shared by or with you accessible through natural language queries. Then last quarter came Posts Search, which lets you search all unstructured text and posts that people have ever made on Facebook. Then just last month Facebook formed a new artificial intelligence (AI) group.

Straig! ht from the pages of a Ray Bradbury novel comes a secretive department whose goal is to hone "all of the knowledge that people have shared on Facebook…to help make sense of all the content that people share so we can generate new insights about the world to answer people's questions."

What does this AI group really mean? Artificial intelligence has the potential to help Facebook recognize emotions behind texts and analyze photos. Based on this level of understanding, Facebook could then predict the likely future behavior of each of us.

With the recent acquisition of Mobile Technologies, Facebook intends to use AI to also delve into speech recognition and machine translation as well to further figure out how to use who you are to its advantage. All of these technology advances make for fascinating conversation, but do little to help the user. For Facebook though, these tools simplify the path to growing ad revenue. By knowing you Facebook can best help its advertisers sell to you.

When did signing up with a social network become a vehicle for signing away your identity? Should any group within any company have the right to break down every aspect of your five senses for profitable gain? How far do we allow any business to push the safety envelope in the name of revenue?

When I started Sgrouples, I did so with the intent of combining social media with personal privacy. As a conscious capitalist, I believe that social media presents a profitable opportunity that can and should put the user experience at the forefront of the medium and that can and should better society by enabling us to communicate more closely with one another. Underneath my intentions lies a common theme of user safety, one which I fail to see in Facebook's model. We should all get to enjoy the wonderful benefits and pleasures that social media affords us, but under an umbrella of safety that visibly protects us and gives us the peace of mind we want when online and interacting in our everyday lives.

Al Jazeera America lands deal with Time Warner …

Al Jazeera America, a recently launched cable news channel that's funded by the government of Qatar, is entering millions of more households in the U.S.

Time Warner Cable, the second largest U.S. cable TV provider, said Thursday it has agreed to carry Al Jazeera America in its lineup in the coming months, a distribution deal that the upstart network has sought for months.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

AJAM, as the network is known, will be available to the Digital Basic tier customers of TWC in its two largest markets – New York and Los Angeles – by the end of the year. The cable company will introduce the network to other markets by the end of March.

AJAM, the latest offshoot of the Al Jazeera media conglomerate, entered the U.S. market in January by paying about $500 million for Current TV, a struggling cable network founded by Al Gore.

Al Jazeera gutted Current TV's programming and installing its own brand of news operation, focusing on domestic news. Citing Current TV's low ratings, TWC dropped the channel as ownership transferred to AJAM.

TWC's decision was a big blow to AJAM, which had counted on continuation of the channel carriage for its presence in New York and Los Angeles. The two companies continued their talks as AJAM began airing in August.

"We said in January that we would consider Al Jazeera America. Now that the channel is live, we think that it would be of value to our customers and are pleased to make it available," said Melinda Witmer, TWC's chief video and content officer.

Cable companies have been streamlining channel lineups as they move increasingly to on-demand content. And Time Warner has said Current TV was dropped for low ratings and insisted that the decision wasn't influenced by conservative media critics who fear that AJAM would serve as a mouthpiece for Qatar's government.

With TWC's Digital Basic tier customers totaling about 9 million, AJAM says it will reach nearly 55 million customers once the cable company! finishes installing the channel in the lineup.

AJAM will also be available to customers of Bright House Networks, a cable operator whose carriage contracts are negotiated by TWC.

"We appreciate the vote of confidence that Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks have given to our brand of unbiased journalism and look forward to working with them as Al Jazeera America continues to grow," said Ehab Al Shihabi, Al Jazeera America's interim CEO, in a statement.

LIVE FROM FPA EXPERIENCE: Advisers must account for portfolio risk

Mark Peterson Mark Peterson

Advisers must reconsider risk in client portfolios as markets enter what will be a "low return decade" for fixed income investments, according to an industry expert.

The risk discussion has previously focused on examining past results and it's concentrated on equity risks. Neither of these approaches alone are going to work going forward, said Mark Peterson, director of investment strategy for BlackRock, speaking at the Financial Planning Association's national conference in Orlando on Sunday.

"Quantifying risk is one of the industry's greatest challenges," he said.

The industry needs to diversify by risk source across portfolio investments, said Mr. Peterson, whose firm has $13 trillion under advisement in its risk management group. Just like diversification is a strategy used to account for equity risks, portfolios will need to include many types of bond investments, too.

Top 5 Low Price Companies To Watch In Right Now

"Embrace bond diversification," he said. "Your safe stability asset class is going to be challenged over the next decade."

Advisers will need to help clients understand the role that risk plays within their portfolios and consider the impact that changes in factors such as inflation, interest rates, currencies, political situations and liquidity risk will have on the portfolio as a whole, he said.

But it's difficult to capture the effect of different sources of risk, Mr. Peterson said.

To that end, BlackRock is making available to financial advisers who work with BlackRock or its iShares exchange-traded-funds a portfolio stress testing tool. It analyzes the risk within portfolios of about 45 different scenarios, such as a spike in oil or gold prices or large change in inflation, Mr. Peterson said.

He calls the approach, "the Moneyball of risk," referring to the 2011 sports drama in which managers assemble a competitive baseball team using a technical analysis approach. Down the road, he believes, everyone will take such considerations into account when evaluating portfolio risk.

"Even though the last 50 years have been all about equity risk, it's not going to be going forward," Mr. Peterson said.

The Market Says Obamacare Is Here to Stay

LinkedIn Logo RSS Logo James Brumley Popular Posts: 3 Stocks That Don’t Care About a Government ShutdownGold & Silver’s Weak Q3 Should Improve in Q45 Stocks Leading the Generic Drug Charge Recent Posts: The Market Says Obamacare Is Here to Stay 3 Warnings Before You Play With Inverse ETFs Like DUST Roche’s Breast Cancer Drug Approval Is Just the Beginning View All Posts

The advent of the Affordable Care Act wasn’t exactly news to traders when open enrollment began Tuesday. Investors have had three years to figure out which companies are the bill’s beneficiaries and which are the victims, so most Obamacare-driven trades were already in place.

Hospitals and managed care stocks, for instance, have found a steady stream of buyers for a while, now that a higher number of insured people will almost certainly keep primary caregivers busy. Meanwhile, medical device names have struggled in the shadow of the newly implemented medical device tax.

Yet, the Affordable Care Act might be in more jeopardy now than it has been at any point since it was made a law in 2010. That’s all thanks to the budget debate, which has shut down the federal government’s non-essential functions indefinitely.

The threat is a potential defunding of the plan, by default. Obamacare can only go into effect if it’s funded by the federal government’s budget for fiscal 2014, but with the two parties unwilling to come to an agreement on the budget, the bill is effectively dead in the water … along with many other government operations.

Sure, the Affordable Care Act falls under the budget’s compulsory funding, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe. If the money to implement it simply doesn’t exist,  there’s no effective way to enforce the new law. Not unless Obamacare was to take money out of Social Security and military paychecks (which isn’t going to happen).

So, will Obamacare be undone by a budget impasse? The collective wisdom of investors might hold the answer.

Numbers Don’t Lie

What was this week’s best-performing industry group? If you guessed the healthcare sector, you’re right! Hospital stocks are up more than 7% this week alone, led by Tenet Healthcare (THC) and Community Health Systems (CYH).

Makes sense. Above all else, with tens of millions of newly-insured U.S. residents, more people are apt to visit a hospital, and caregivers no longer have to worry about not getting paid. If there was any industry at risk of having the rug pulled out from underneath it — especially after the 60% advance these stocks have made in the past twelve months alone — it’s the medical facilities group. However, medical facilities haven't given up one iota of ground. Indeed, they’ve rallied despite the 11th hour roadblock put up in Washington D.C.

At the extreme other end of the spectrum are medical device makers like Medtronics (MDT) and Stryker (SYK).

These companies have already been crimped by Obamacare’s 2.3% excise tax (which went into effect at the beginning of this year) on certain medical devices in order to fund most of the act’s implementation. The tax reportedly costs the industry more than $2.5 billion per year, but medical device makers’ stocks are up a decent 13% since the end of 2012.

They’re still a clear laggard relative to their healthcare sector peers, however, and the group’s stocks have struggled just to break even this week despite the possibility of the burdensome tax being repealed. Why? Because it’s the one aspect of Obamacare the Democrats at least seem willing to talk about letting go.

Top Consumer Stocks For 2015

The fact that traders aren’t interested in plowing into the long-beleaguered group even though the tax has a shot at being repealed suggests the market has little faith the measure will actually be undone. This indirectly suggests Obamacare isn’t going anywhere, since it has no other funding source, and the Democrats clearly aren’t going to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act.

In between Obamacare’s biggest winners and losers, in the middle of the spectrum, are the pharmaceutical stocks.

The law’s upside and downside for the pharma industry are something of a gray area, but broadly speaking, the Affordable Care Act tends to favor generic drug makers like Mylan (MYL) and Actavis (ACT), and presents something of a burden on brand-name pharma companies like Pfizer (PFE) and Merck (MRK).

Generic drug stocks are up more than 2% this week, and both Actavis and Mylan are at all-time highs. Meanwhile, the mainstream and higher-end drug makers are flat for the week. This isn't the first slow week for Pfizer and Merck, though — they’ve been lethargic for a few months.

Bottom Line

Though they might not even know it, investors are collectively smarter than they realize. That collective intuition is probably on target concerning the Affordable Care Act too, and based on how traders have treated the bill’s most affected stocks, it doesn’t look like anybody really thinks Obamacare is on the chopping block.

As of this writing, James Brumley did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

At its core,Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ: CZR  ) is an extremely flawed company. It has a huge presence in the struggling regional gaming market, it has no exposure to gaming's biggest market, Macau, and it has $21.3 billion of debt strangling it. So how has it gained 130% this year, easily outpacing more profitable rivals?

  • [By Travis Hoium]

The recovery in Las Vegas is gaining steam, and after 6.4% growth in May and 4.3% growth over the past year, the gaming companies there have some room to breathe. MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM  ) and Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ: CZR  ) have the most to gain, but Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN  ) and Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS  ) will benefit as well. In the following video, gaming analyst Travis Hoium covers who will benefit the most from Las Vegas' growth and one stock to stay away from.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

While all the major casino operators will benefit from a recovering Las Vegas, this market probably won't produce any massive growth for the industry anytime soon. Double-digit growth rates will still probably only be seen in Macau, but since MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM  ) and Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ: CZR  ) control such a large portion of the hotel rooms and casino floor space in Las Vegas, news that the city is recovering should help.

Top 10 Casino Companies To Watch For 2015: Wynn Resorts Limited(WYNN)

Wynn Resorts, Limited, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the development, ownership, and operation of destination casino resorts. The company owns and operates Wynn Las Vegas casino resort in Las Vegas, which includes approximately 22 food and beverage outlets comprising 5 dining restaurants; 2 nightclubs; 1 spa and salon; 1 Ferrari and Maserati automobile dealership; wedding chapels; an 18-hole golf course; meeting space; and foot retail promenade featuring boutiques. It also owns and operates an Encore at Wynn Las Vegas resort, a destination casino resort located adjacent to Wynn Las Vegas that features a 2,034 all-suite hotel, as well as a casino with 95 table games, 1 sky casino, 1 baccarat salon, private VIP gaming rooms, and 778 slot machines. In addition, the company operates Wyn n Macau casino resort located in the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People?s Republic of China. Wynn Macau casino resort features approximately 595 hotel rooms and suites, 410 table games, 935 slot machines, 1 poker room, 1 sky casino, 6 restaurants, 1 spa and salon, lounges, meeting facilities, and retail space featuring boutiques. Further, it operates Encore at Wynn Macau resort located adjacent to Wynn Macau. Encore at Wynn Macau resort features approximately 410 luxury suites and 4 villas, as well as casino gaming space, including a sky casino consisting of 60 table games and 80 slot machines, 2 restaurants, 1 luxury spa, and retail space. The next step
The top end of the market has been doing well over the past two years, and Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS  ) and Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN  ) have been the beneficiaries. Las Vegas Sands's Las Vegasrevenue was up 7% in the first quarter, while Wynn'swas up 6.6%. But MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM  ) and Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ: CZR  ) haven't seen the same success in the lower end of the market.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Cotai continues to be the growth engine of Macau. The Macau Peninsula, where Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN  ) and MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM  ) are located, have been holding steady but the growth is on Cotai, and that's why investors are willing to pay a premium for Melco Crown and Las Vegas Sands.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

While gamblers in Las Vegas are focused on the payouts on the casino floor at Wynn Resorts (WYNN), I'm more interested in this stock's dividend payout -- there's no gamble there. The $14 billion casino resort operator currently pays out a $1 per share dividend each quarter, adding up to a 2.8% dividend yield at current price levels.

Wynn has benefitted from a rebounding economy in Las Vegas. The firm's Wynn and Encore resorts are two of the newer properties on the strip, and their high-end positioning keeps VIP business coming into the door. Vegas, though, isn't Wynn's cash cow anymore. China is. Today, around 70% of revenues actually come from Macau, the high-end Chinese gambling district. Macau is Wynn's crown jewel in large part because the firm is one of the few that's been granted a gaming license from the government: Wynn has two properties in Macau, with a third on the way.

Healthy levels of profitability have translated into a $2.2 billion cash position for WYNN -- enough to pay for around 15% of the firm's market capitalization. Concentrated ownership from founder Steve Wynn should align management's incentives with investors, and increase the likelihood of a dividend hike.

Advisors' Opinion:

MGM has built a history of being the odd player out in many of the most lucrative opportunities in the gaming industry. In Macau, the company is stuck in the slower-growth area of the Asian gaming destination. In Las Vegas, the new CityCenter area in the mid-Strip has watered down MGM's opportunities and has created another potential barrier for patrons coming from the northern end of the Strip to its namesake MGM Grand property. And in New Jersey, where online gaming has boosted prospects for Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ: CZR  ) and Boyd Gaming (NYSE: BYD  ) , MGM has no exposure.

That trade will hit if PENN manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $57.44 to some past resistance at $58 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PENN as long as it's trending above Monday's low $55.65 or above more support at $54.71 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that this near or above 824,334 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then PENN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $59.93. Any high-volume move above $59.93 will then give PENN a chance to hit $65.

Nyxio Technologies Corp (OTCMKTS: NYXO), COREwafer Industries Inc (OTCMKTS: WAFR) and NanoTech Entertainment, Inc (OTCMKTS: NTEK) are three small cap stocks in some very diverse industries. In fact, one of these stocks just bought a 3D ice sculpture business. So will investors see their investment melt with that small cap stockalong with the other two? Here is a closer look to help you decide for yourself:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Call them hunches (because that's all they are), but now would be a great time to get out of a NanoTech Entertainment, Inc. (OTCMKTS:NTEK) position and/or get into an ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAD). NTEK looks like its reached its maximum potential - for the time being - while ACAD looks like it's ready to start rolling higher again.

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Earnings Preview: What To Watch In Q2 Results?

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is expected to report a low double-digit drop in earnings when it publishes its second-quarter financial results after the close of the market on Jan.23, 2014. A live webcast of the earnings conference call will be made available at 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time on the Microsoft Investor Relations website.

Wall Street, according to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, expects the Windows software maker to earn 68 cents a share, representing a decline of 10.50 percent from last year when it earned 76 cents a share.

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft's earnings have beat Street view thrice in the past four quarters, with upside surprise of 1.3 to 14.8 percent.

[Related -How To Earn 30% A Year From Microsoft -- Without Buying A Single Share]

The consensus estimate has come down from 74 cents over the past 90 days, suggesting analysts are in a bearish mood over the company's earnings prospects for the second quarter as a weak PC market and macro conditions have dampened the Street's optimism. However, two analysts have raised the profit forecast while one analyst has cut the same in the last one month.

After better-than-expected first quarter earnings, the market is hoping for solid results for the October to December period despite a difficult macro environment and a continued decline in the PC environment. The focus would be on Windows 8 adoption, data center and Office 365.

[Related -Microsoft Corporation (MSFT): Good Buy or Good-Bye?]

Quarterly revenue is expected to grow 10.4 percent to $23.68 billion from $21.46 billion in the same quarter last year.

Worldwide PC shipments totaled 82.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2013, a 6.9 percent decline from the fourth quarter of 2012, according to preliminary results by Gartner,. This is the seventh consecutive quarter of shipment decline.

However, Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, believes that though PC shipments continued to decline in the worldwide market in the fourth quarter, markets, such as the U.S., have bottomed out as the adjustment to the installed base slows.

Strong growth in tablets continued to negatively impact PC growth in emerging markets. In emerging markets, the first connected device for consumers is most likely a smartphone, and their first computing device is a tablet. As a result, the adoption of PCs in emerging markets will be slower as consumers skip PCs for tablets.

Consumers shifting from PCs to tablets for daily content consumption continued to decrease the installed base of PCs both in mature as well as in emerging markets.  Greater availability of inexpensive Android tablets attracted first-time consumers in emerging markets, and as supplementary devices in mature markets.

Investors will look for further updates on the recent Nokia deal and ramping of Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 tablets. The market would also be focusing on the uptake of Windows 8.1, an update to its popular Windows 8 operating system, and newly launched Lumia 1520.

Since PC market remains weak, Microsoft has to gain ground in enterprise software. The company is looking to leverage the cloud and its own brand devices to stay afloat in the highly competitive enterprise market.

If Microsoft manages to get top firms to use its cloud software, it would lock them into its ecosystem. Investors would be looking at the company's cloud strategy and how it is faring.

In December, Microsoft introduced the Cloud OS Network, a worldwide consortium of more than 25 cloud service providers delivering services built on the Microsoft Cloud Platform: Windows Server with Hyper-V, System Center and the Windows Azure Pack.

Enterprise as a percent of revenues was 55 percent in fiscal 2013 up from 36 percent in fiscal 2010. The improved contribution from enterprise drives improved financial visibility but also greater long-term revenues and profit potential given higher margin cloud business.

In addition, the shift to cloud services promises to lessen Microsoft's decades-long piracy dilemma and monetize emerging markets like China which is now the company's fastest growth market at $1 billion plus revenues. Investors will want some color on the company's investment strategy towards the key emerging markets.

Meanwhile, Microsoft may record lower gross margins in the near to intermediate term due to higher CAPEX and the multi-year transition towards devices and cloud services. But, investors should look through this transition to the benefits that will accrue as a leading enterprise cloud IT provider from a larger total available market.

In addition, the entertainment division's revenue would also be closely watched and any updates on the next generation console, Xbox One. Microsoft sold more than 3 million units of Xbox One.

The Street would be hoping for any announcement on the CEO succession as Steve Ballmer would retire within the next 12 months. The latest in the candidates list is Ericcson (NASDAQ:ERIC) CEO Hans Vestberg while others include Stephen Elop and Satya Nadella. Microsoft, which has had only two Chief Executives in its 38-year history, is expected to announce its third CEO in the early part of 2014.

For the first quarter, the world's largest software company reported net income of $5.24 billion or 62 cents a share, compared to $4.47 billion or 53 cents a share for the year-ago quarter. Excluding $113 million in revenue deferred mainly related to pre-sales of Windows 8.1, Microsoft would have earned 63 cents a share. Quarterly revenue rose 16 percent to $18.53 billion. Excluding deferral, first quarter adjusted revenue grew 7 percent.

Shares of Microsoft have gained 8 percent since reporting its first quarter earnings, and increased 34 percent in the last one year. The stock, which has a market cap of more than $303 billion, traded between $27 and $38.98 during the past 52-weeks. The stock trades 12.6 times its forward earnings.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Asit Sharma]

The airline industry has a singular talent for draining the pockets of well-intentioned investors. Highly leveraged balance sheets and bankruptcies are the norm. Significant labor costs and unpredictable jet fuel prices wreak havoc on variable costs. Yet some airlines generate solid returns quarter after quarter. Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK  ) , Ryanair (NASDAQ: RYAAY  ) , Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) , and Copa Holdings (NYSE: CPA  ) each manage to be consistently profitable. Let's examine a few themes they share in common, and zero in on their individual strategic ideas.

  • [By El Torero]

Ryanair (RYAAY) just announced record annual profits of €569 million ($736 million). It expects to break that total this financial year, with predicted profits of between €570 million ($737 million) and €600 million ($776 million). The Irish airline had 79 million passengers last year and it plans on expanding that number with an aggressive expansion strategy, including a number of new routes and with legacy airlines in their sights. Importantly, with Europe deep in economic crisis still, increasing numbers of passengers choose to fly low-cost with Ryanair. With a P/E ratio of 18.52 compared to the industry average of 12.43, according to Reuters, the future looks very bright for Ryanair.

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Ryanair Holdings PLC (NASDAQ: RYAAY) was downgraded to Neutral from Buy at UBS.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) was reiterated as Buy and on the Focus List with a $59 price target at Argus, and it was raised to Outperform at RW Baird.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

In the world of publicly-owned businesses, we try to invest with the same sort of individuals. In our opinion, Michael O'Leary, Ryanair's Chairman and CEO, is one such example of a talented, driven executive. Michael was born on a farm in Ireland, the second oldest of six siblings. Although his beginnings were not remarkable, Michael figured out how to get the best education he could by attending the best schools he could. After attending a Jesuit boarding school as a young boy, he graduated from Trinity College with an accounting degree; began his career working for KPMG, a large public accounting firm; and, soon afterwards, became a financial advisor to Tony Ryan, Ryanair's founder. In 1986, Michael was hired to work for Ryan and initially advised him to close the airline immediately since it was losing so much money! In 1989, when Ryanair (RYAAY) was on the brink of insolvency, Ryan offered Michael the job of Deputy CEO of the airline and in 1994 as its CEO. Michael accepted, on the condition that if he couldn't make it profitable, he would be allowed to shut it down! He also chose to work for a percentage of profits rather than for a salary from the money losing business.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But CSX has responded to the coal crisis in a couple of ways. First, both it and fellow coal-focused railroad Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC  ) have ramped up their efforts to export coal, as countries such as China and India remain hungry for low-cost-energy alternatives. Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) has a natural advantage in supplying Asia because of its deposits in Australia, allowing it to send coal to India and China more cheaply than its peers, especially those with extensive deposits in the eastern half of the U.S. But even eastern producers have managed to boost their exports considerably, and that's helping the railroads that serve coal companies.

  • [By Lauren Pollock]

Graseck Morgan Stanley colleague Bill Greene ranks No. 1 in transportation. One of his best calls was a sell in March 2010 on Expeditors International (EXPD) of Washington Inc., which assists companies in shipping goods across international borders. Most of Expeditorsbusiness is on trade routes across the Pacific Ocean, especially between China and the U.S. Greene predicted that the company growth would stumble as freight flows shifted to emerging markets -- between China and Vietnam, for example. In addition, companies were increasingly near-shoring, or relocating factories and offices closer to headquarters, resulting in fewer international shipments.

[Related -DryShips Inc. (DRYS) Q3 Earnings Preview: What To Expect?]

Since weakness does not represent a change to improving industry fundamentals, investors can use the recent sell-off as an opportunity to accumulate shares of well capitalized companies with exposure to the dry bulk market.

  • [By Nickey Friedman]

DryShips (NASDAQ: DRYS  ) is easily the most famous dry shipping compnay, and perhaps one of the least risky ways to invest in shipping. Over 75% of its sales as of last quarter actually come from its drilling business. Analysts already expect the company's 2014 to be well into the black, so any extra rate increases should make a material percentage increase in its bottom line. DryShips currently trades at less than half book value. Before the collapse in 2008, it traded as high as over $100 per share.

  • [By Dan Newman]

For example, when prices were high and companies, such as Diana Shipping (NYSE: DSX  ) andDryShips (NASDAQ: DRYS  ) , ordered more ships, these ships were finally completed a few years later when shipping prices had already cratered. Now, Diana's fleet is on average only 6.4 years old, while DryShips' fleet is on average 7.4 years old, when the typical life of a ship is 25 years. While these young fleets might be good as an investment in the future if global trade picks up, today's troubled eurozone and slowing China will leave these newer ships wanting for higher demand.

Itau Unibanco (ITUB): A lot of investors have never heard of Itau because it’s headquartered in Brazil, but it’s one of the world’s largest financial institutions. With 5,000 branches, 100,000 employees and nearly $500 billion in assets (yes, half a trillion!), ITUB is not just the largest Latin American bank, it is one of the biggest in the world. With proven dominance in Brazil (and Latin America), Itau Unibanco is a go-to financial pick, and it currently yields an attractive 3.5%. I recently recommended that my Inner Circle readers sell ITUB on a nice bounce due to the risk of near-term weakness on economic data out of China, but I already looking for an opportunity to get back in.

Overall, the company is trying to resist European volume trends while successfully putting in practice its pricing power. Even when market-trends flow against Imperial's top-line, the company should be able to grow its Free Cash Flow (FCF) per share once again in 2013 -its 2013 FCF yield should be as high as 9%. Some businesses are simple great. They deliver growing cash yields to its owners even when conditions are tough.

Global recession notwithstanding, International Paper has re-imagined itself as a strong cash generator. I focus upon Free-Cash-Flow (FCF), thereby subtracting routine capital expenditures from Operating Cash. What remains is what Warren Buffett refers to as "Owner Earnings," or what is left over after a company has handled all aspects of running and maintaining its business.

  • [By Fede Zaldua]

Eni (E) is an authentic cash cow for its shareholders. I believe the company will be able to sustain a greater than 6% cash dividend yield in 2014 even when the company's estimated 2015 free cash flow (FCF) yield is at just 4%. Asset sales as well as high oil prices should help the company meet its capex requirements and to continue giving back cash to shareholders through dividends. The recent sale of its stake in Sever Energia to the Novatek-GazpromNeft Joint Venture represents a clear hint into the company's strategy. After all, Eni's portfolio has several high quality disposal candidates which could attract the industry's interest – the first disposal candidate that comes to my mind is the remaining 8% stake Eni owns in Galp. The Italian oil and gas leader, which is held by Tom Gayner, sells for 12.5 times 2014 earnings and 5.5 times EV/EBITDAX.
